Setting up an idle standby cluster on IBM i

Set up your IBM® WebSphere® Portal Express® environment as an idle standby configuration for the purpose of failover. Your idle standby cluster server is not operational to service user transactions or to query workloads. The idle standby cluster server becomes active only if the primary node fails.

Complete the following tasks to set up your idle standby cluster environment:
  1. Preparing your IBM i operating system in an idle standby environment
    View information on setting up your operating system for IBM WebSphere Portal Express. Other components might require additional steps; see the product documentation for the specific components you want to install for information.
  2. Installing WebSphere Portal Express on IBM i on the primary node
    IBM WebSphere Portal Express is installed as a single component, complete with an integrated database for storing information. After installation, you can expand your environment to include idle-standby, a remote database for easier management and better distributed processing load, and LDAP-based authentication.
  3. Idle standby: Performing post-installation tasks on IBM i
    Depending on your business needs, there are additional tasks that you can run post-installation to configure your idle standby environment.
  4. IBM i idle standby: Preparing DB2 for i
    To setup a remote IBM DB2® for i database, create user IDs and databases on a remote server. Tasks are provided to assist with creating the user IDs and the databases. Before you can use the tasks, you must modify properties files.
  5. Configuring the deployment manager on IBM i in an idle standby cluster
    After installing IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment and installing IBM WebSphere Portal Express on the primary node, you must configure the deployment manager.
  6. IBM i idle standby: Creating an Idle standby configuration
    After installing IBM WebSphere Portal Express on the primary node, configuring a remote database, and preparing the primary node to communicate with the Deployment Manager, you can create your idle standby cluster.
  7. IBM i idle standby: Preparing the Web server
    Install and configure the Web server plug-in, provided by IBM WebSphere Application Server, to set up your Web server to communicate with IBM WebSphere Portal Express.
  8. Configuring WebSphere Portal Express to use a user registry on IBM i in a clustered environment
    Configure user registry security on IBM WebSphere Portal Express to protect your server from unauthorized users. You can configure a stand-alone LDAP user registry or you can add LDAP user registries and/or database user registries to the default federated repository. After configuring your user registry, you can add realms for Virtual Portals or a lookaside database to store attributes that cannot be stored in the LDAP user registry.
  9. Installing WebSphere Portal Express on IBM i on the additional node in an idle standby cluster
    Install IBM WebSphere Portal Express on your additional node to create an idle standby cluster.
  10. IBM i idle standby: Adding an idle standby server
    After installing IBM WebSphere Portal Express on your additional node, you must add the node to the idle standby cluster.
  11. Optional: IBM i idle standby: Installing the Personalization sample and database
    This exercise installs the Portal Personalization sample and configures your database for the Personalization sample. No additional database requirements are needed.
